MSHS Cell Phone Policy
Cell phones and personal electronic devices (including airpods, etc.) must be kept out of sight during all class times, including advisory, study hall, if a student finishes an assignment early, if a class has a substitute, and breaks during class time.
Students are allowed to have their phone/personal electronic devices during passing periods and lunch time. Additionally, students are allowed to wear smartwatches throughout the school day, however may not use them for messaging during class; if they are used inappropriately then they will be considered an electronic device and the following policy will apply.
Families can always leave a message in the office or send an email to students if a message needs to be communicated during class.
If a student has a cell phone/personal electronic device during class times:
- 1st Offense - Administrative warning and parent notification is made by office staff
- 2nd Offense - Phone is collected by the office. Student can pick up their phone in the office after 3:20pm and parent notification is made by office staff.
- 3rd Offense - Phone is collected by the office. Lunch detention (1 day) for repeated disobedience. Student can pick up their phone in the office after 3:20pm and parent notification is made by office staff.
- 4th Offense - Phone is collected by the office. After school detention (1 day) for repeated disobedience. Student can pick up their phone in the office after 3:20pm and parent notification is made by office staff.
- 5th Offense - Phone is collected by the office. After school detention (2 days) for repeated disobedience. Student can pick up their phone in the office after 3:20pm and parent notification is made by office staff.
- 6th+ Offense - Phone is collected by the office. Progressive discipline will apply. Parent, student, and administrator meeting for repeated policy infractions to determine next steps. Parent/guardian must pick up the phone in the office and parent notification is made by office staff.
Staff's responsibility is to ask the student to put away cell phone/personal electronic device in the moment, then contact the front office to report the incident for follow-up. When reporting, please provide the student's name, location and exactly what you witnessed.
*Any cell phone usage that is determined to have taken place during class times that violates the policy, even after the fact, will be enforced by the progressive discipline model.
**If a teacher allows a student to utilize their cell phone for an academic purpose such as photography in Journalism or using the tuning application for Band, then a teacher must provide written communication of the allowance with a designated time frame. Please note that if a student is not utilizing their cell phone/personal electronic device for the specified reason, then this policy still applies.
